Trends in nutrient supplementation
While new forms of malnutrition has emerged, such as overnutrition, undernutrition and micronutrient deficiencies still affect the world today. Currently, one-third of the population is deficient in at least 1 micronutrient, and this may affect immune response. Otilia Perichart-Perera, PhD, MSc, RDN, details how nutrients and the lack thereof may affect the immune system, such as how it may alter immunologic function and have inflammatory effects, nutrition-related chronic diseases, and in the era of COVID-19, the dietary and lifestyle changes that have brought about the trends in nutrition today, and its effects of the gut microbiome and its implications on immunity.
