Feeding premature infants has been a challenge for many decades. Knowing that nutrition may affect long-term outcomes, it is interesting to note how breast milk was first choice, where after in the 80s formula became popular and nowadays human milk is the preferred nutritional source again.
Human milk banks rose, closed and reopened, all within the last 50 years. Prof. Hans van Goudoever discusses during his presentation the crucial role played by human milk in delivering adequate nutrition to support growth and health during this vulnerable life stage.
