Polycystic Ovary Syndrome and the risk of overweight in Young Women
One of the most common endocrine disorders in young women, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) has been associated with reproductive and metabolic consequences. Insulin resistance is common even in lean, young women with PCOS. The prevalence of overweight and obesity is also increased in this population. Together, these conditions may lead to reproductive and metabolic disorders later on in life. Interventions to prevent weight gain and promote weight loss are necessary for women with PCOS. These may include caloric restriction and an active lifestyle. Nutritional interventions will improve metabolic parameters, and may well play a role in fertility. In this presentation, Prof Norman speaks about the role of nutrition in the management of PCOS. He reviews the literature and highlights the effectiveness of key nutritional and lifestyle interventions. Prof Norman also presents a multidisciplinary model of care for patients with PCOS.
