Vitamin D is critical for the prevention of rickets in children. Effects of high-dose vitamin D for non-bone related conditions remain uncertain. Vitamin D, along with adequate calcium and magnesium intake are necessary for maximizing adolescent bone mass and primary prevention of osteoporosis later in life. In his presentation, Professor Steve Abrams from Department of Pediatrics, Dell Medical School at the University of Texas, discusses physiology vitamin D, the burden of its deficiency and the role of this nutrient in bone and non-bone health.
