Nutrition advocacy in action: the politics of sugar vs. fat
Current government-produced nutritional guidelines in the developed world concentrate in the main on what people should eat more of or less of – not the total number of calories consumed. In the US, most people eat double the number of calories recommended per day.
Marion Nestle believes that this approach, which is leading to an obesity and diabetes epidemic, is driven by politics and industry lobbying. The media in the developed world regularly ponders the question: Is it fat or sugar that is killing you?
In this presentation, Marion Nestle lays out her reasons for thinking this is the wrong question to ask. Both are to blame. She questions the scientific research behind much of the current thinking around dietary recommendations, noting that much research has been funded by organisations with a business interest in the outcome.
