Gut hormones and nutrition
There is hardly a country in the world where obesity is not a problem, affecting life expectancy and contributing to social issues, incidences of stroke, diabetes, cancer and arthritis as well as heart and liver disease. In an age of advancing technology, the pharmaceutical industry has produced various drugs to combat obesity, but all have failed.
The only successful approach to combating obesity is bariatric surgery which is expensive and has a significant death rate. In this presentation, Sir Stephen outlines new clinical trials which are looking at gut hormones and how they control appetite as well as gut function: this could be as effective as surgery, and much more cost efficient. Billions of obese people around the world could benefit from the administration of an elevated gut hormone mixture to enhance satiety and thus control food intake.
