Gut microbes play an important role in the response to stress. This is particularly so in childhood. The major initial determinant of the gut microbiota is the mode of delivery, whether by caesarean section or through the birth canal. Subsequently, diet largely determines microbiota composition. Stress-related disorders are associated with poor-quality diets.
