He is the Voluntary Faculty and the Founding Medical Director for Nutrition Support and Intestinal Rehabilitation at Children's Hospital Los Angeles, as well as an Emeritus Professor of Pediatrics at the Keck School of Medicine, University of Southern California. He received his MD from UC Irvine and his PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
He completed his pediatric residency at Children's Hospital Los Angeles and fellowships in clinical nutrition at Children's Hospital Medical Center in Boston and pediatric gastroenterology at UCLA, and he is board certified in pediatrics, nutrition, and pediatric gastroenterology.
Dr. Merrit has extensive experience in both academia and industry, having served as a medical director for Nestle USA, Johnson and Johnson, and Abbott Laboratories. He has edited ASPEN’s Nutrition Support Practice Manual, served on the board of directors of ASPEN and the American Board of Physician Nutrition Specialists, and is the Editor-in-Chief for the American Society of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition’s journal, Nutrition in Clinical Practice.
