There is frequently a fierce tension between some academics and the private sector especially in the field of global health. The academics accuse the food companies of malign intent in peddling unhealthy foods to unsuspecting customers. There are instances when such accusations are justified such as supersizing, product placement that encourages confection sales to children, the marketing nutrient-poor junk foods with excessive salt and sugar content, and so forth. However, the majority of the world’s food producers are not only ready to engage with academics to design a more healthy and environmentally sustainable food chain, but are actually leading such efforts. Such efforts are frequently inhibited by a fear of criticism from conspiracy-theory academics, and this is especially acute if multinationals try to create nutrient-enriched products for the world’s poorest billion; they can be damned if they try and damned if they don’t.
