The gut microbiota development in early life is heavily affected by many factors, with breast milk having a big positive impact. Human milk is associated with better outcomes in children in respect to risk of acute and long-term disease. These benefits are partially provided by supporting the growth of specific infant type bifidobacteria capable of metabolizing human milk oligosaccharides, such as B. infantis.
