The True Weight of the Obesity Epidemic: Factors and Implications

Based on information from the WHO in 2022, 1 in 8 people are living with obesity globally. This global obesity epidemic, or globesity, has become a concern due to its lifelong effects especially in raising the risks for communicable and non-communicable diseases, more specifically in cases that begin in childhood. Given the many factors that may contribute to it, such as the environment, epigenetics, and early life nutrition, the long-term goal is addressing overweight and obesity in the different life stages through different preventive measures.

Where Are They?

In preterm born infants, growth is one of the biggest safety parameters, where the Fenton Growth charts are the world-wide standard. However, human growth is not constant through gestation and early infancy. Thus the quoted 15g/kg/d may work for gestational age that is less than 29 weeks, while infants born between 29 to 33 weeks are not found on the chart, and infants born 33 weeks and above grow less than 15g/kg/d.
