Anti-Fel d 1 immunoglobulin Y antibody-containing egg ingredient lowers allergen levels in cat saliva
Anti-Fel d 1 immunoglobulin Y antibody-containing egg ingredient lowers allergen levels in cat saliva
Satyaraj, E, Li, Q, Sun, P, & Sherrill, S
Antibodies against Fel d 1 (the major cat allergen) bind and neutralize the active form of the Fel d 1 allergen, preventing it from crosslinking IgE on the mast cells of sensitized individuals and triggering an allergic response; similarly, bound and neutralized Fel d 1 is not detected on the standard ELISA assay for Fel d 1 despite its presence in the sample.

The first trial of the study evaluated the timing of salivary sample collection and compared salivary active Fel d 1 levels in a group of cats fed a test diet with an egg product ingredient containing anti-Fel d 1 IgY antibodies. The second study trial compared salivary levels of active (non-neutralized and allergenic) Fel d 1 in the saliva of cats fed a control diet versus cats fed the same test diet. The cats fed the test diet had significantly reduced active Fel d 1 levels (compared to their baseline levels) by the third week of feeding the diet: salivary active Fel d 1 was reduced by 30% in the first trial and 24% in the second. This study showed that feeding cats a diet with an egg product ingredient containing anti-Fel d 1 IgY antibodies reduced active Fel d 1 in the cats’ saliva starting in the third week of feeding.
