Low Birth Weight
Malnutrition
In the womb, babies get all they need from their mother’s body. An inadequate maternal diet can consequently lead to many nutritional risks for maternal and child health. Both maternal obesity and underweight are associated with different consequences, such as increased maternal morbidity and increased risk of gestational diabetes mellitus for the mother and preterm/low birth weight infant increased prevalence and poor mental and physical development for the child. Nutritional strategies might be helpful to reduce prevalence of these specific situations as well as the minimize the risks associated with them.
