The Hong Kong Society for Paediatric Respirology (HKSPR) - Paediatric Critical Care Medicine (PCCM) Chapter, and the Hong Kong Society of Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (HKSPGHN) jointly convened a symposium supported by the Nestlé Nutrition Institute in March 2015 featuring two eminent experts in the field of paediatric critical care nutrition. Dr Nilesh Mehta (Boston Children’s Hospital, USA) discussed important concepts pertaining to the distinctive nutritional requirements of critically ill children and the need for a protocol-driven approach to ensure appropriate and adequate nutrition. Professor Sunit Singhi (Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh, India) highlighted the role of probiotics in rebalancing the intestinal microbiota during periods of critical illness to provide nutritive and immune function support and help prevent nosocomial infections.
