- Expertise in nutritional and life-course epidemiology, with a focus on longitudinal research in low and middle-income country contexts
- Principal Investigator of the long-running INCAP Nutritional Supplementation Longitudinal Study, following a cohort of individuals who participated as children in a nutrition supplementation trial in Guatemala
- In collaboration with researchers in Brazil, Guatemala, India, the Philippines and South Africa as well as in England and the US, he studies the development of adult health and human capital
- Secondary interests: methodologies of dietary assessment and program evaluation and has published 300 peer-reviewed manuscripts
- Fellow of the American Society for Nutrition
- Past Chair of the Global Nutrition Council of the American Society of Nutrition and is Associate Editor of the Journal of Nutrition
